With Us

I am with you always, to the end of the age – Matt 28:20b

There are times in our life when we simply want to get away, but for most people life can be quite lonely.  Even being in a crowd of people can be lonely.  If you see everyone else having fun and talking while you sit in a corner, you lonelier still.  Even if we have many friends, very few have others in their lives that truly understand them, on a deep level.  Often we fear someone knowing us on a deep level.

When Jesus commissions his disciples to then go make disciples, he gives them an incredible promise.  Jesus’ followers are supposed to be about two things: being a disciple and making disciples.  I must confess that I do not always understand what that command means.  I frequently do not know what to do.

Jesus’ promise is amazing: he will be with us…always.  As we are going through this world in obedience to him, we are not alone.  We are never alone.  He is always with us.  Even when we feel isolated from others and from the world, Jesus is with us.

Truthfully, I do not feel like Jesus is always with me.  Sometimes I ignore his presence or close my ears to his voice.  Sometimes his presence is inconvenient.  I want to do my own thing in my own way.  One thing, I/we must do is lean in to that presence.  Allow his presence to matter.  Learn to listen to his still voice.

When do you most feel Jesus is with you?  How do you hear him?  When do you feel shame to be in his presence? Why?  How can you lean in to the presence of Jesus in your life?
